Letter from The Board of Directors
Standing in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter Global Network and all people of good will, The People’s Shakespeare Project denounces the murder of George Floyd. We deplore the violence perpetrated against Black people and Black communities in the United States and across the world. We recall and are inspired by Frederick Douglass who insisted that “no man can put a chain about the ankle of his fellow man without at last finding the other end of it fastened about his own neck.” Even as the long arc of the moral universe strains to bend toward justice, the long arm of slavery perpetuates individual and institutional racism through segregation, convict leasing, red lining, school-to-prison pipelines, mass incarceration, and extralegal violence. The chains and the choke holds that have crushed Black dreams and ended Black lives have also compromised the principles and practices of democracy. “Holding the mirror up to nature” and yoked together by pervasive and systemic racism, we stand, yet again, at a crossroads. Once more, we recognize the urgency of reparative intervention — action that brings both justice and peace for all. Convinced of the indivisibility of human rights, we are committed to the transforming power of theatre to instruct, to provoke, and to heal.
ShakesCheer
Virtual, abridged performances bringing laughter and light to the living room!
Our most recent performance was Twelfth Night on Sunday, January 10th, 2021. Recordings of ALL performances can be enjoyed on our YouTube channel!
For this third round of ShakesCheer, we shared proceeds equally with local nonprofit Milagro House. Based in Lancaster, PA, Milagro House provides Education, Housing, and Support Services for women and children who would otherwise be experiencing homelessness.

In spring 2020, with live events and shows cancelled due to the necessity for social distancing, we launched ShakesCheer with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The cast from our summer 2017 production reunited and rose to the challenge of performing Shakespeare remotely . Donations from Midsummer’s audience members were shared equally with the Lancaster Cares Covid-19 Response Fund. This fund was set up by the Lancaster County Community Foundation and the United Way to provide residents with food, housing, and rapid response dollars during the crisis.
Next, we were thrilled to work with many talented TPSP alums and two new technical wizzes who brought Verona to live-stream life for The Taming of the Shrew. After Taming, we contributed half of proceeds to the Crispus Attucks Community Center. CACC strives to improve the quality of life for youth and families in Lancaster by providing services that promote community prosperity, physical and mental health, and by offering programs which preserve the African American heritage.
In this challenging time, we are thankful for all our supporters and excited to keep making theatre for and with YOU.

Extragive 2020
On Friday, November 20th, we were blown away by our donors’ generosity. We raised almost 30% more than in 2019, which has given us such a boost during this difficult time. Thank you to all of our supporters, including our loyal base and the many first-time donors! Wow.
In 2020, we have adapted to the challenges of the Covid-19 crisis with a brand new set of virtual productions (ShakesCheer) and a modified session of Camp Will on Zoom. We are so grateful to our performers, volunteers, audiences, and donors for your support. This community makes all that we do possible.
